Veezu supports Wolverhampton community group

1 February 2024

Wolverhampton’s leading private hire operator has announced their support of local community group, Grandmentors Wolverhampton.

Veezu, formerly known as Go Carz, has donated £1000 to the cause as part of its ongoing support of local community projects and organisations.

Grandmentors Wolverhampton, created through a collaboration between Volunteering Matters and the City of Wolverhampton Council, pairs mature members of the community with young care leavers. Volunteers meet with a young person each week to boost their confidence, work towards goals and aid with their transition into wider society.

A big obstacle for the care leavers in particular is transportation to and from their weekly sessions. Being the leading private hire operator in the West Midlands, Veezu is keen to work further with the charity to help alleviate this.

Farhana Akhtar, Project Coordinator at Grandmentors Wolverhampton, said: “Thanks to the donation from Veezu, we will be able to provide more mentoring sessions for young care leavers to be supported by their Grandmentors. They will be able to attend appointments together, discuss challenges and receive guidance to help improve their emotional wellbeing. The donation will strive to improve the lives of young care leavers so that after they leave care, they can lead successful lives.”

Showcasing the importance of the work of Grandmentors, Shaun, a young care leaver who is a part of the charity, said: “Sue (a Grandmentor) is someone who is easy to talk to and get along with. I can have a laugh and joke with her whilst also knowing she is there for me during the many times I had challenges over the last year.

“Thanks to her help and guidance I am better able to manage my relationships, maintain healthy barriers with those that effect my mental health, and even my physical health is better as I gained 10 kg. My mental health has had a significant improvement and confidence has really grown.

“I would recommend others to have a mentor, you just know that you’re not alone. Someone cares. When you have difficult situations they can help you, whether you are struggling mentally or physically they can support you or find alternative options to get that support in place for you.”

Graham Hoof, Regional Operations Director for Veezu in the Midlands, said: “The work of Grandmentors Wolverhampon is incredibly important for helping young carers receive the support and guidance they need to reach their full potential. We are delighted to be supporting such an important cause and hope to contribute to its ongoing success.”
